This blog provides weekly updates about St. Mary’s Vatican appeal process.
St. Mary’s Jamesville, a Catholic church in Jamesville, New York, appealed its 2007 closure by the Diocese of Syracuse. In May 2011, the Vatican declared that St. Mary’s Church should not be closed because there is no “grave” reason to close the church, home to a vibrant, financially solvent Catholic community in a growing suburb in central New York State.
This decision has been cited as a historical decision, as it is one of the first times the Vatican ruled in favor of lay parishoners, not a diocese.
